DESPITE the holiday, 75 children with special needs went to school to see what they can learn from art and sports activities mounted by the non-government Differently Special Achievers Movement.

The activities on July 17 kicked off the Movement’s mentorship program in a school where hundreds of students are children with special needs—San Jose SPED Elementary School in Barangay San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal.

Together with Natimars Foundation, a charitable institution that focuses on education and the arts, Differently Special conducted activities that divided the SPED students into 18 different groups, depending on their interests.

“We provide free programs that allow persons with disability [PWDs] to develop their skills and talent,” Karen Navarro, one of the cofounders of Special Achievers, said.

“The focus is to help PWDs with limited resources to receive free training and coaching in the areas of arts and sports from people excelling in those areas,” Navarro said.

Art is a language that can be spoken by all souls within the universe. It is not a language defined by words, grammar, or syntax. Rather, it is characterized by the emotional vibrations and energy of the artist. It exists in the realm of every individual’s soul. It is for this reason that children in earnest have the potential to make the most riveting artwork. Their charm, their innocence, their lack of self-consciousness and complete disregard for the norm that adults subscribe to as a result of social indoctrination does not affect their mindset or creativity. Instead, they are driven by pure and authentic self-expression.

GIFTED Save for the awkward signature at the bottom of the painting, most would not assume that these pieces were made by children with autism.

We are in need of reserve volunteers to teach kids in Childhaus (a halfway house for kids with cancer.)
The literacy program (Basic Math, English, Science and Arts) takes place every Sunday 4 to 6 in the afternoon.

They have their own special needs—but they have the talent and the spirit to help others in deeper need.

An art exhibit mounted by 18 children growing up with various disabilities recently helped raise funds for kids with cancer.

The project, held last week at The Podium in Mandaluyong City, featured the works of budding artists gathered by Differently Special Achievers Movement, a non-government organization composed of volunteer SPED (special education) teachers and therapists.
